I’ve had my 2018 GTI for about 2 and a half years now, and I’m thinking about replacing it. While I do really like the way it drives, I haven’t been able to enjoy it nearly as much as I had hoped to due to some build quality issues that have not been good for my OCD tendencies. As silly as it sounds, it’s reached the point that I’ve decided I’ll be better off just getting something else, at least once covid dies down a bit. So, what to get?

As sacrilegious as it may be for a car enthusiast, the CX-5 has really been drawing my eye. Yes, it’s a dreaded crossover, but I’ve been wanting something a bit larger, a bit easier to get in and out of, with a bit more ground clearance so I don’t have to worry about scraping on inclines - something that’s already happened with the GTI a couple times, even when I’m being careful. I think with the turbo and maybe a set of coilovers to lessen the stock wheel gap the Mazda will hit just the right spot. How much of a heretic would I be if I did this?

We got my wife into 2018 CX5 Touring. I like it. It’s zippy, rides pretty good and has a fair amount of space. It motors through snow and ice well too. They do tend to eat brake pads and tires though. The only downside is the UI on the infotainment system is atrocious.

It’s perfectly normal to want these things, so don’t feel the need to justify it to us. I think the CX- 5 is great and would buy one if I had the need. Buy and enjoy, I say!

The CX-5 goes and handles better than it has any right to. Even the non-turbos are adequate.

I’m also considering one to replace the 3 when the time comes.

I’m glad you think so! I guess I feel a bit sheepish about it due to the crossover hate that’s pretty prevalent among car people, which I’ve never entirely agreed with.

You do you man. I won’t tell you to not buy a car you want.

It’s a sad category, but Mazda is clearly making the best of it.

We test drove a CX-5 in 2018 when we replaced my wifes old Lexus RX330. It was very nice, build quality was great. My biggest complaint was it was underpowered. We also wanted something that could tow, which the CX-5 didn’t. If the Signature Edition (the turbo model) was available at that time we may have changed our mind. We ended up buying  a GMC Terrain Denali, which is about the same size, has a 2.0L turbo with 252 HP, GMs excellent 9 speed auto, AWD, and can tow 3500 lbs. I think its at least worth considering.

I had a loaner CX5 for my GTI issues. It’s not bigger inside, at least where you sit. It rides worse(jarring, baby waking- Motortrend’s words) , it’s louder inside, and it’s cramped up front. It would be a massive downgrade. The Tiguan I also had as a loaner is better in every imaginable way.

I love lowered crossovers, that looks so much better than the 3 hatch, and I'm a huge Mazda guy.

I think the CX-5 looks great too. I’m just wrapping up my 84 months of payments on my 2013 Mazda3 and am looking this direction, too. Although I would like to ride out a year or two (or three) of no payment joy, so we’ll see what the 2022 CX-5 looks like!

I will say that I am super happy with Mazda’s build quality and longevity. In the 130k km and 7 years I’ve had my 3 it’s been nothing but a joy with no major repair costs aside from usual maintenance. It’s still on the factory brakes, too.

I can’t recall where they are all building CX-5's now but I would suggest that you make sure the VIN starts with a J or walk away. Personally I want my Japanese car to be made in Japan - I think their workers share the OCD for quality!

Interesting. I test drove a non-turbo one a while back and remember it driving quite nicely, apart from feeling a bit gutless. But I’d do another more extensive test drive before making any decisions

What's up with your GTI? I also have an 18 that has had a few issues. CX5 is always a good choice, I think they drove great.

I really like those, strongly considered purchasing one for my better half several years ago. A neighbor has a brand new silver one and I really think it is the best looking compact CUV currently, exterior and interior . But it is still a compact CUV - enthusiastic driving experience is MUCH farther down on it’s priorities than that GTI.

It’s kind of a long story, but basically there were some fit & finish issues that the dealer made worse, requiring a body shop, which also didn’t do a good job. It’s all cosmetic, but it bothers me too much to really want to keep this car long term.

While my GTI was being bought back, I actually got my C5 at the same time as I had the CX5. The Z06 package includes less sound deadening, yet the road noise was worse in the CX5. I always thought the Chevy Aveo would be the most miserable car I’ve ever had to spend a bit of time in, but no, the CX5 took that crown handily. It is terrible at being a crossover(practical, roomy, comfortable), and sucks at being sporty. It didn’t handle confidently, but it had a ride worse than my Fiesta ST. I genuinely am confused by the fanfare it has.

Meanwhile, the Tiguan was super roomy, incredibly comfortable, and as quiet as my Dad’s LS430. It also was more fun to drive, because i t handles like a Golf.

I like how these look, and was trying to steer my wife towards one the last time she was shopping for a car . She ended up choosing a Forester inste ad since she didn’t like how small the CX-5 felt inside.

How about something with more performance so you dont miss the GTI ? What’s your budget? Can you do a bMW X1(before they went fwd) or 2017 or older Infiniti Qx50? This one not the new fwd cvt one

could there have been something wrong with the CX-5 you got? Most of your issues I could chalk up to subjective experiences, but the ride being harsher than a FiST seems really unusual. I know the FiST is known for being particularly jarring, and even the regular fiesta doesn’t have a...supple... suspension. It seems very unusually to me that the CX-5 would be that bad. That being said I’ve had rides in a handful of new/new adjacent non-performance cars that felt like they had solid struts.

It had 1400 miles on it, and despite the blind praise, Motortrend even admitted the ride was bad, referring to it as “jarring, baby- waking”. It was alarmingly bad, but that summed up my feelings on the rest of it. The infotainment was stupid, making you focus on the knob while you were driving, instead of using the touch screen in your sight line. The sound deadening didn’t exist. In the rain, it was slightly sketchier than my Z06 when it had 8 year old corded tires on it. It was just a mess, and it only had 1400 miles.

Also, what absent minded individual decided to have proximity start, but not proximity button unlock? The Tiguan I had was the same on the trim level scale, SE vs Touring, and everything about it absolutely blew the CX5 out of the water.

They look great. Any tunes available for the turbo version?
